PLANT:

  • Ledebouria socialis, commonly known as the Silver Squill, is a small, bulbous perennial native to South Africa. This plant forms small, egg-shaped bulbs at or just above the soil level, from which fleshy, lance-shaped leaves emerge. The leaves are grayish-green or silver with dark green or purplish spots, giving them a "leopard-print" pattern that’s highly ornamental. The undersides of the leaves can range from purplish-red to green. In spring, it produces delicate, tiny purple to greenish flowers on tall stalks. Ledebouria socialis is easy to grow and is tolerant of various light and water conditions, making it a popular choice among succulent and houseplant enthusiasts.
  • Water Needs: Moderate; allow soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering, as the bulbs can be prone to rot.
  • Light Requirement: Prefers bright, indirect sunlight to partial shade. Can tolerate some direct sunlight but benefits from filtered light.
  • Maintenance: Low; minimal care is needed. Remove any dead leaves to maintain appearance. Propagate by dividing bulbs.
  • Common Names: Silver Squill, Leopard Lily.
  • Family: Asparagaceae.
  • Origin: Native to South Africa.
  • Cold Tolerance: Not frost-resistant; protect from freezing temperatures.
  • Heat Tolerance: Tolerates heat well, especially in shaded or partially shaded areas.
