PLANT:

  • Gasteria is a genus of succulent plants native to South Africa, known for their distinctive rosettes of thick, tongue-shaped leaves. Gasterias are prized for their ornamental value, drought tolerance, and ease of care, making them popular choices for both indoor and outdoor cultivation.
Flowers: In the spring or summer, mature Gasteria plants may produce tall, slender stalks bearing clusters of tubular flowers. The flowers can vary in color, including shades of pink, red, orange, or yellow, and are often attractive to pollinators like bees and butterflies.
  • Water Needs: Moderate; water thoroughly when the soil is dry to the touch, then allow it to dry out partially between waterings. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot.
  • Light Requirement: Prefers bright, indirect sunlight to partial shade. Can tolerate some direct sunlight, particularly in the morning or late afternoon.
  • Maintenance: Low; minimal pruning required. Remove dead or withered leaves as needed. Propagate through offsets or division.
  • Common Names: Gasteria, Ox Tongue.
  • Family: Asphodelaceae.
  • Origin: Native to South Africa.
  • Cold Tolerance: Moderately frost-tolerant; protect from extended freezing temperatures.
  • Heat Tolerance: Tolerates heat well and thrives in warm to hot conditions.
