Like many cacti, Ferocactus glaucescens has spines. The spines are usually yellow to brown and can be quite long. The central spines are typically longer and more robust than the radial spines.
When in bloom, Ferocactus glaucescens produces vibrant, funnel-shaped flowers. The flowers can be shades of yellow, orange, or red. They appear at the top of the cactus and are typically larger in comparison to the size of the plant.
