PLANT:

  • Caralluma hesperidum produces attractive flowers with distinct dark stripes on the petals. The flowers are usually a shade of purple or violet, adding to the ornamental appeal of the plant. This succulent typically forms clumps of slender, upright stems with toothed edges. The stems are often branched and can reach heights of up to 12 inches (30 cm). The plant has small, star-shaped flowers that bloom in clusters at the tips of the stems.
  • Water Needs: Low; drought-tolerant. Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.
  • Light Requirement: Prefers bright, indirect sunlight or partial shade. Protect from intense, direct sunlight.
  • Maintenance: Low; minimal pruning required, mainly to remove dead or withered growth.
  • Common Name: Orbea decaisneana subs. hesperidum
  • Family: Apocynaceae.
  • Origin: Native to South Africa.
  • Cold Tolerance: Not frost-resistant; protect from freezing temperatures.
  • Heat Tolerance: Tolerates heat well and thrives in warm to hot conditions.
  • The term "Caralluma" originates from the Arabic language and directly translates to "flesh wound," likely alluding to the unpleasant odor emitted by the flowers of this genus, much like Stapelia, a closely related plant. Caralluma hesperidum is utilized as a component in numerous mystical and medicinal concoctions within the Senegalese tradition.
