PLANT:
- Albuca polyphylla, also known as the "Pregnant Onion" or "Sweet Garlic," is a fascinating and unique bulbous plant.
The common name "Pregnant Onion" is derived from the plant's bulb, which consists of a cluster of smaller bulbs attached to a central bulb. The appearance is somewhat reminiscent of a string of onions, and as the plant matures, it produces new bulbs around the original one.
One of the intriguing features of Albuca polyphylla is its fragrance. When the plant is disturbed or touched, it emits a sweet scent reminiscent of vanilla or honey. This aromatic quality adds to the overall appeal of the plant.
Albuca polyphylla produces tall spikes of small, star-shaped white flowers when it is in its active growing phase. The flowers are visually striking and provide an attractive contrast to the long, slender leaves.
- Water Needs: Low to moderate; allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Water more during the growing season and reduce in winter when the plant is dormant.
- Light Requirement: Prefers bright, indirect sunlight or partial shade. Protect from intense, direct sunlight.
- Maintenance: Low; minimal pruning required, mainly to remove dead or withered growth.
- Common Names: Slime Lily, Pregnant Onion, False Sea Onion.
- Family: Asparagaceae.
- Origin: Native to South Africa.
- Cold Tolerance: Not frost-resistant; protect from freezing temperatures.
- Heat Tolerance: Tolerates heat well and can thrive in warm to hot conditions.
