PLANT:
- Tephrocactus articulatus var. papyracanthus, commonly called the Paper Spine Cactus, is a distinctive, segmented cactus native to Argentina. It is known for its unique appearance, with jointed, cylindrical stems that easily detach and are covered with thin, papery spines that resemble delicate, twisted strips. These spines offer an ornamental look without being as sharp as typical cactus spines, making it a favorite among cactus collectors. During the spring, it may produce small, white to pale pink flowers at the tips of its segments, adding a soft contrast to its textured form.
- Water Needs: Low; allow soil to dry out completely between waterings. Avoid excessive moisture, especially in cooler months.
- Light Requirement: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Adequate sunlight helps maintain spine color and plant health.
- Maintenance: Low; minimal pruning required. Handle with care as segments detach easily. Propagate by individual segments, which can root after detaching.
- Common Names: Paper Spine Cactus, Tephrocactus articulatus var. papyracanthus.
- Family: Cactaceae.
- Origin: Native to Argentina.
- Cold Tolerance: Tolerates mild frost but should be protected from prolonged freezing temperatures.
- Heat Tolerance: Good heat tolerance; thrives in hot, dry climates.
