PLANT:
- Tamarindus indica, commonly known as the Tamarind Tree, is a long-lived tropical species native to Africa and widely cultivated across Asia and Central America. It is renowned for its spreading canopy of fine, feathery leaves and its distinctive brown pods containing tangy, edible pulp used in cooking and traditional medicine. This slow-growing tree can live for several centuries, with some specimens exceeding 200 years. Beyond its fruit, the tamarind’s elegant structure and resilience make it a favored ornamental and shade tree in warm climates.
- Water Needs:
Moderate; water regularly during the growing season but allow the soil to dry between waterings. Once established, it becomes highly drought-tolerant. - Light Requirement:
Full sun; thrives with at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. - Maintenance:
Low; prefers well-draining, sandy soil. Prune occasionally to maintain shape and remove dead branches. Minimal fertilization needed once mature. - Common Names:
Tamarind, Indian Date, Imli - Family:
Fabaceae - Origin:
Tropical Africa (now naturalized across South and Southeast Asia) - Cold Tolerance:
Sensitive to frost; protect from temperatures below 10°C. - Heat Tolerance:
Excellent; thrives in hot, tropical, and subtropical conditions.
CERAMIC:
The ceramic vessel, handcrafted at Neraw, reflects the rugged beauty of the tamarind’s form. With a smooth, earthy green glaze, it mimics the natural flow of the plant’s energy and the organic connection between plant and pot. A modern, sculptural piece that balances the strength of nature with art.
