PLANT:
- Mammillaria spinosissima, commonly known as the Red-Headed Irishman, is a popular cactus native to central Mexico. Known for its dense covering of red, orange, or white spines, this cylindrical cactus forms small clusters over time, reaching up to 12 inches in height. During spring and summer, it produces a ring of tiny pink to purple flowers near the top, creating a crown-like display. Mammillaria spinosissima is highly regarded for its compact, spiny form and easy care, making it a favorite among cactus collectors.
- Water Needs: Low; water sparingly and let the soil dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering during winter dormancy.
- Light Requirement: Full sun to partial shade. Bright light helps maintain spine color and encourages flowering.
- Maintenance: Low; minimal pruning is needed. Handle carefully due to sharp spines. Propagate by seeds or offsets if they develop.
- Common Names: Red-Headed Irishman, Spiny Pincushion Cactus.
- Family: Cactaceae.
- Origin: Native to central Mexico.
- Cold Tolerance: Limited frost tolerance; protect from freezing temperatures.
