Ipomoea bolusiana is a unique caudiciform plant native to southern Africa, valued for its swollen, woody caudex and trailing green stems. This member of the morning glory family produces deeply lobed leaves and eye-catching funnel-shaped flowers in shades of pink to magenta with darker centers. The caudex serves as a water reservoir, allowing it to survive dry spells. Often grown as a curiosity in succulent and caudex collections, it adds sculptural interest and seasonal color.
Water Needs:
Low to moderate; water thoroughly during the growing season, letting the soil dry out in between. Drastically reduce watering in winter.
Light Requirement:
Full sun to bright indirect light. Prefers 6–8 hours of sun, but protect from harsh afternoon rays in very hot climates.
Maintenance:
Low; plant in fast-draining soil. Ensure the caudex is not buried to avoid rot. Minimal feeding needed during active growth.
