PLANT:
- Fockea edulis is a slow-growing caudiciform succulent native to South Africa, prized for its bulbous, sculptural base and slender climbing vines. This plant is approximately 10–12 years old, displaying a beautifully aged caudex with textured, cork-like skin that stores water for long dry periods. Its vines bear small, glossy green leaves and may produce clusters of pale green to white flowers in summer. Over time, it develops into a living sculpture that embodies both resilience and grace.
In its native regions, Fockea edulis has been used traditionally for various purposes. The caudex is edible and has been consumed by indigenous people during times of food scarcity. Additionally, parts of the plant have been used for medicinal purposes.
- Water Needs: Low; allow the soil to dry out almost completely between waterings. Water sparingly to prevent overwatering.
- Light Requirement: Prefers bright, indirect sunlight or partial shade. Protect from intense, direct sunlight.
- Maintenance: Low; minimal pruning required, mainly to remove dead or withered growth.
- Common Names: Hottentot Bread, Kambroo Plant.
- Family: Apocynaceae.
- Origin: Native to South Africa.
- Cold Tolerance: Not frost-resistant; protect from freezing temperatures.
- Heat Tolerance: Tolerates heat well and can thrive in warm to hot conditions.
CERAMIC:
Planted in a handcrafted Neraw vessel with a heavily textured, volcanic surface that recalls cooled lava and mineral crusts.
The glaze moves between deep bronze and oxidised green, capturing the raw energy of earth and fire. Each ridge and indentation forms naturally during the firing, giving the piece a tactile, geological presence that grounds the plant’s soft, climbing growth.
- Size: cm Height x cm Width.
- Unique stoneware handcrafted pot from Green Glossy Collection
- Fired up to 1200°C
- Glazed in the interior, to keep the roots safe and secure.
