PLANT:
- Ferocactus pilosus, also known as Mexican Fire Barrel or Mexican Lime Cactus, is a robust barrel-shaped cactus native to northeastern Mexico. This species is easily recognized by its thick, spiny ribs and dense, bright red to orange spines that give it a fiery appearance. In late spring and summer, it produces small yellow to red flowers that bloom at the top of the cactus, followed by edible fruits. Ferocactus pilosus is popular in cultivation due to its bold appearance and ease of care, making it a striking addition to rock gardens and arid landscapes.
- Water Needs: Low; water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering in winter when the cactus is dormant.
- Light Requirement: Prefers full sun; bright, direct sunlight encourages healthy growth and spine coloration.
- Maintenance: Low; minimal pruning required. Protect from excess moisture and ensure well-draining soil. Propagate by seeds or offsets if available.
- Common Names: Ferocactus pilosus, Mexican Fire Barrel, Mexican Lime Cactus.
- Family: Cactaceae.Origin: Native to northeastern Mexico.
- Cold Tolerance: Limited frost tolerance; protect from freezing temperatures as prolonged exposure can damage the plant.
- Heat Tolerance: Excellent heat tolerance; thrives in hot, arid climates.
