PLANT
Euphorbia platyclada is an unusual and highly architectural species from Madagascar, often mistaken for a coral, a fossil, or even a piece of charred wood rather than a living plant.
Its flattened, segmented branches grow upright and irregular, forming a dense, skeletal silhouette that feels graphic and almost monochromatic.
The dark green to near-black tones, combined with the plant’s rigid structure, give it a stark, sculptural presence that shifts subtly with light and shadow.
This is a plant that appeals to collectors drawn to form over color, a living object that feels closer to contemporary sculpture than traditional greenery.
Water Needs: Low.
Water sparingly during the growing season, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering significantly in winter.
Light Requirement: Bright indirect light to full sun.
Strong light enhances compact growth and maintains the plant’s characteristic dark coloration.
Maintenance: Low.
Requires a very well-draining mineral substrate and good airflow. Avoid excess moisture and prolonged cold.
Common Names: Dead Plant, Flat-stem Euphorbia (occasionally used)
Family: Euphorbiaceae
Origin: Madagascar
Cold Tolerance: Sensitive to cold. Protect from temperatures below 10°C.
Heat Tolerance: Excellent. Thrives in warm, dry conditions.
CERAMIC
Planted in a handcrafted Neraw ceramic vessel with a vertical, monolithic form that mirrors the plant’s upright growth.
The vessel’s surface is rich with layered textures, circular impressions, and mineral glazes that recall weathered stone, fossilized wood, or ancient architectural fragments.
Earthy browns, muted creams, and darker inclusions create depth and visual rhythm without overpowering the plant.
Together, plant and ceramic form a totem-like composition, where organic geometry and material memory coexist in a quiet but powerful balance.
