PLANT:

  • Echinocactus grusonii brevispinus, a variation of the popular Golden Barrel Cactus, is renowned for its shorter, less prominent spines compared to the standard variety. Its spherical, green body features pronounced ribs with areoles bearing fine golden-yellow spines, creating a softer aesthetic. Native to Mexico, this slow-growing cactus can reach up to 24 inches in diameter and is a standout feature in xeriscapes and desert gardens. It is highly drought-tolerant and long-lived, often flowering after several years with small yellow blooms at its crown in summer.
  • Water Needs:
Low; water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering in winter.
  • Light Requirement:
Full sun; thrives in bright, direct sunlight but can tolerate partial shade.
  • Maintenance:
Low; requires well-draining soil and occasional fertilization during the growing season. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
  • Common Names:
Golden Barrel Cactus Brevispinus, Short-Spined Barrel Cactus.
  • Family:
    Cactaceae.
  • Origin:
    Native to central Mexico.
  • Cold Tolerance:
Hardy to around -6°C with dry soil. Protect from prolonged frost.
