PLANT:
- Dioscorea elephantipes, commonly known as the Elephant’s Foot or Turtle Back, is a remarkable caudiciform plant native to South Africa. It forms a large, woody, dome-shaped caudex with a cracked surface resembling an elephant’s foot. This slow-growing species is a deciduous climber, producing slender, twining vines with heart-shaped leaves during its growing season. The caudex serves as a water reservoir, allowing it to thrive in arid environments. Highly prized among collectors, it represents both endurance and sculptural beauty.
- Water Needs:
Low; water moderately during active growth (typically autumn to spring), allowing soil to dry between waterings. Keep nearly dry during dormancy when the vines die back. - Light Requirement:
Bright indirect light to full sun. Prefers strong light for compact growth and a well-developed caudex. - Maintenance:
Low; plant in very well-draining soil and a deep pot to accommodate the caudex. Avoid overwatering and cold, damp conditions. - Common Names:
Elephant’s Foot, Turtle Back, Hottentot Bread - Family:
Dioscoreaceae - Origin:
South Africa - Cold Tolerance:
Can tolerate brief drops to 5°C if kept dry; avoid frost. - Heat Tolerance:
Excellent; adapted to hot, dry climates.
