PLANT:
Cyclamen hederifolium is a hardy, tuberous perennial native to the Mediterranean region, admired for its sculptural caudex (bulb) and delicate, nodding flowers that emerge in shades of soft pink to lavender before the leaves appear. The specimen shown features a mature, exposed caudex (8–10 years old) accented by moss and natural texture, resembling a miniature woodland landscape. During autumn and winter, heart-shaped marbled leaves emerge, followed by a dormant rest period in summer when the bulb stores energy for the next season’s growth.
Water Needs:
Moderate; water when in active growth (autumn to spring) and keep nearly dry during summer dormancy.
Light Requirement:
Bright indirect light to partial shade. Prefers gentle morning or filtered light for best flowering.
Maintenance:
Low; plant in well-draining, humus-rich soil. Avoid watering directly onto the caudex. Allow natural dormancy cycles for longevity.
Common Names:
Ivy-leaved Cyclamen, Mediterranean Cyclamen
Family:
Primulaceae
Origin:
Mediterranean Basin (southern Europe, western Asia)
Cold Tolerance:
Can tolerate temperatures down to 0°C; hardy if kept dry during dormancy.
Heat Tolerance:
Moderate; prefers cool, shaded conditions in summer.
CERAMIC:
A shallow ikebana-inspired dish, hand-built in dark clay with soft, carved edges and an organic, uneven profile. The surface carries subtle textural marks and natural variations in tone, echoing stone plates used in traditional Japanese floral arranging. Designed as a low landscape container, it holds a living carpet of moss that rises like a small hillside, creating a quiet stage for the delicate Cyclamen to emerge.
