Acer palmatum 'Butterfly' is a stunning dwarf Japanese maple cultivar admired for its elegant, deeply lobed leaves with creamy-white and soft green variegation. In spring, new growth often features pink margins that mature into creamy edges, creating a striking contrast. In autumn, the foliage takes on hues of red and magenta before shedding. Its compact, upright growth makes it perfect for small gardens, patios, containers, or as a feature in a Japanese-style landscape. It’s a slow grower, reaching about 2–3 meters in height over many years.
Water Needs:
Moderate; prefers consistently moist but well-draining soil. Avoid waterlogging and protect from drought stress in summer.
Light Requirement:
Partial shade to filtered sunlight. Some morning sun is beneficial, but too much direct sun—especially in hot climates—can scorch variegated leaves.
Maintenance:
Low to moderate; prune lightly in late winter to maintain shape and remove dead or crossing branches. Mulch to retain soil moisture.
Common Names:
Butterfly Japanese Maple, Variegated Japanese Maple
Family:
Sapindaceae
Origin:
Cultivar of Japanese origin
Cold Tolerance:
Hardy down to approx. -15°C to -20°C
Heat Tolerance:
Moderate; benefits from afternoon shade in hotter climates to prevent leaf burn
