PLANT:
- Pachycereus pringlei, commonly known as the Mexican Giant Cardon, is one of the largest columnar cacti in the world, native to northwestern Mexico. It can reach up to 60 feet in height, making it a prominent feature in desert landscapes. This cactus is known for its thick, ribbed stems, which are covered with clusters of long spines. In spring, it produces large, white flowers that open at night and are pollinated. The Mexican Giant Cardon is revered for its impressive size and resilience, often compared to the Saguaro cactus.
- Water Needs: Very low; water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. It is highly drought-tolerant and can go extended periods without water.
- Light Requirement: Prefers full sun; thrives in bright, direct sunlight, essential for maintaining its health and growth.
- Maintenance: Low; minimal pruning is required. Propagate by seeds or cuttings, though seeds may take time to germinate and grow to a mature size.
- Common Names: Mexican Giant Cardon, Elephant Cactus.
- Family: Cactaceae.
- Origin: Native to northwestern Mexico, including Baja California.
- Cold Tolerance: Limited frost tolerance; can withstand short periods of mild frost but should be protected from prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures.
- Heat Tolerance: Extremely heat-tolerant and well-suited to arid, hot desert climates.
