PLANT:
- Opuntia vestita cristata, also known as the Cotton Coral Cactus, is a fascinating crested form of the Opuntia vestita species. Native to South America, particularly Bolivia and Argentina, this cactus is known for its unique, fan-like growth pattern, resembling coral or cresting waves. Its stems are densely covered in fine white hairs, giving it a soft, woolly appearance. In the summer, it may produce small yellow or pink flowers, adding a delicate contrast to its fuzzy, sculptural form.
- Water Needs: Low; water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering in winter when the plant is dormant.
- Light Requirement: Prefers bright, indirect sunlight to partial shade. Too much direct sun may cause sunburn, especially in hot climates.
- Maintenance: Low; minimal pruning required. Handle carefully due to fine spines under the woolly covering. Propagate by cuttings, allowing them to callous before planting.
- Common Names: Opuntia vestita cristata, Cotton Coral Cactus.
- Family: Cactaceae.
- Origin: Native to South America, particularly Bolivia and Argentina.
- Cold Tolerance: Limited frost tolerance; protect from freezing temperatures.
- Heat Tolerance: Good heat tolerance; thrives in warm to hot climates.
