Mammillaria bocasana 'Fred' is a rare and fascinating mutation of the classic Mammillaria bocasana cactus. Instead of the typical radial symmetry of its parent, 'Fred' develops in a distorted, crested, or monstrous form, often producing lumpy, sculptural growths in a pale green hue. This unusual appearance makes it a favorite among cactus collectors and enthusiasts of oddities. Like the standard species, it may still bloom with small pinkish-white flowers under the right conditions.
Water Needs:
Low; water only when the soil is completely dry. Avoid watering during winter dormancy.
Light Requirement:
Bright indirect light to partial sun. Protect from harsh midday sun to avoid scorching.
Maintenance:
Low; thrives in well-draining cactus soil. Handle gently, as its tissue is soft and easily damaged.
Common Names:
Mammillaria 'Fred'
Family:
Cactaceae
Origin:
Mutation/cultivar of Mammillaria bocasana (Mexico)
Cold Tolerance:
Down to 5°C if kept dry and protected.
Heat Tolerance:
Good; prefers warm, dry environments but may need protection from intense sun.
