PLANT:

  • Gymnocalycium stellatum is a small, globular cactus native to Argentina. It is characterized by its flattened, gray-green body adorned with distinct ribs and relatively short, radiating spines that resemble a star pattern, giving the plant its name ("stellatum" means "star-shaped"). This species is slow-growing and stays compact, making it ideal for small spaces and container gardening. In spring and summer, it produces funnel-shaped flowers in shades of pale pink to white with a dark throat, adding to its charm. Gymnocalycium stellatum is an excellent choice for collectors due to its unique aesthetic and low-maintenance nature.
  • Water Needs:
Low; water sparingly during the growing season and let the soil dry out completely between waterings. Minimize watering in winter.
  • Light Requirement:
Prefers bright, indirect sunlight or partial shade. Too much direct sun can cause scorching.
  • Maintenance:
Very low; requires well-draining soil and infrequent fertilization during the growing season. Handle gently to avoid damaging its delicate spines.

    Star Gymnocalycium, Star Cactus.
