PLANT:

  • Epiphyllum anguliger, commonly known as the Fishbone Cactus or Zig-Zag Cactus, is a striking tropical cactus native to the rainforests of Mexico. This epiphytic cactus is known for its unique, jagged, fishbone-shaped stems that give it a dramatic, architectural look. The stems are a rich green and can grow quite long, cascading over the sides of containers or hanging baskets. In late fall to early winter, Epiphyllum anguliger produces large, showy, white or pink flowers that bloom at night, emitting a sweet fragrance. This cactus is a low-maintenance, easy-to-care-for plant that thrives in bright, indirect light and well-draining soil.
  • Water Needs:
Moderate; water when the top few centimeters of soil feel dry, but avoid letting the plant sit in water. Reduce watering during the cooler months when the plant is not actively growing.
  • Light Requirement:
Bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct sunlight, but too much direct light may cause sunburn on the delicate stems.
  • Maintenance:
Low; requires well-draining, slightly acidic soil. Fertilize occasionally during the growing season with a balanced fertilizer. Trim long stems to maintain shape and encourage more branching.
  • Common Names:
Fishbone Cactus, Zig-Zag Cactus, Orchid Cactus.
  • Family:
    Cactaceae.
  • Origin:
    Mexico (tropical rainforests).
  • Cold Tolerance:
Not frost-hardy; protect from temperatures below 10°C.
  • Heat Tolerance:
Tolerates moderate heat but should be shaded from harsh midday sun to prevent sunburn.
