PLANT:

  • Crassula lycopodioides is a charming and compact succulent native to the arid regions of South Africa. Known for its dense, mat-forming growth habit, this species features small, tubular, green leaves that sometimes exhibit a reddish tint when exposed to intense sunlight or cooler temperatures. The leaves are arranged in tight rosettes, creating a lush, carpet-like appearance that makes it an excellent ground cover in succulent gardens, rockeries, or container settings. In spring and summer, Crassula lycopodioides may produce tiny, star-shaped white or pink flowers that add a subtle touch of color to its verdant foliage. Its ease of care and attractive form make it a popular choice among succulent enthusiasts and gardeners looking to add texture and depth to their plant arrangements.
  • Water Needs:
Low to moderate; water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Increase watering slightly during the active growing season (spring and summer) and reduce significantly during dormancy (fall and winter) to prevent root rot.
  • Light Requirement:
Bright, indirect sunlight to partial shade. While it can tolerate some direct morning sunlight, excessive direct exposure, especially in harsh afternoon light, may cause the leaves to develop a reddish hue or become scorched.
  • Maintenance:
Low; requires well-draining soil to prevent water accumulation. Remove any dead or withered leaves to maintain its appearance and encourage healthy growth. Propagate easily through stem or leaf cuttings, allowing cuttings to callous before planting to reduce the risk of rot.
  • Common Names:
    Club Moss Crassula, Lycopodioides Crassula.
  • Family:
    Crassulaceae.
  • Origin:
    Native to South Africa.
  • Cold Tolerance:
Not frost-hardy; protect from temperatures below -1°C. In colder climates, it is best grown indoors or in sheltered environments where it can be shielded from frost.
  • Heat Tolerance:
Tolerates heat well and thrives in warm to hot conditions. Ensure adequate airflow and avoid excessive heat buildup to maintain leaf health and prevent desiccation.
