PLANT:
- Cleistocactus strausii, commonly known as the Silver Torch Cactus, is a tall, columnar cactus native to the mountainous regions of Bolivia and Argentina. It is easily recognized by its densely covered white spines that give it a silvery appearance. Growing up to 10 feet in height, this cactus can form multiple vertical stems, making it a striking vertical accent in cactus gardens and landscapes. In late summer, it produces tubular, red to magenta flowers that emerge horizontally from the upper part of the plant, attracting pollinators. Known for its resilience and unique look, Cleistocactus strausii is highly valued in both outdoor gardens and large indoor spaces.
- Water Needs: Low; water sparingly, allowing soil to dry out between waterings. Reduce watering significantly in winter.
- Light Requirement: Full sun; prefers bright, direct light to maintain its silver spines and encourage flowering.
- Maintenance: Low; requires little care. Handle carefully due to spines. Propagate by cuttings or seeds.
