Tillandsia mauryana is a rare and visually captivating air plant known for its elegant, rosette-shaped foliage and sculptural form. Its silver-gray leaves are soft and fuzzy due to trichomes that help absorb moisture from the air. Native to high elevations in Mexico, this species thrives in drier, cooler environments and often grows on rocks (lithophytic) or trees (epiphytic). When in bloom, it sends out a striking pink to red inflorescence, sometimes with purple flowers, making it a standout among air plants.
Water Needs:
Moderate; mist 2–3 times a week or soak for 15–30 minutes once a week, allowing it to dry completely before placing it back. Reduce watering in humid conditions.
Light Requirement:
Bright, indirect light. Avoid harsh midday sun, which can dry out the plant quickly.
Maintenance:
Low; does not require soil. Ensure good air circulation and avoid stagnant water in the rosette to prevent rot.
Common Names:
Tillandsia mauryana, Silver Rosette Air Plant
Family:
Bromeliaceae
Origin:
Mexico (mainly in high-altitude, arid zones)
Cold Tolerance:
Can tolerate down to around 5°C if kept dry and protected.
Heat Tolerance:
High; adapted to warm, arid climates but benefits from occasional misting in extreme heat.
